Once we had the mesh of the tower, it was pretty quick to do this video. We just used a cylinder for the DMM tet cage and did a dozen test to tweak the materials and then rendered the scene....

You can run this MEL command to see what faces are causing problems:
meshverify -g 0.01
It will select the faces that the plugin has trouble with.
