yeah i had the same problem with norton firewall .. i had to turn it off . ( actually i removed it for AVG and zone Alarm ) .

but yeah i was already using the DMM Cache , otherwise you won't get any animation . you just keep on rendering the frame 1 :) .

i use a splinter shape ( generated using the brokeglass partern ) to get those circular cracks . I must say the way splinters are working just fascinate me .
But that's not enough...

When a license is not found ,the plugin turn in Cache mode.
In Cache Mode , simulation is not possible anymore , you're only able to read caches .

I've just tweaked a bit the sample1.ma scene .
So that the ball hit the vase directly .
But when batch rendering with mental ray i've got the following error
API 0.0 error ...
That would be nice to have too .
